Martina Gladney, the visionary founder of Unseen Faces Foundation, Inc., embodies a life shaped by a deep sense of purpose, often obscured by her humility. Her genuine concern for the physical well-being of others sets her apart in a world where true altruists are rare. Despite being largely self-educated, Martina's entrepreneurial spirit emerged in early childhood, setting the stage for a journey that unfolded beyond expectations.
Martina's unassuming demeanor hides a wealth of accomplishments, starting with her early venture, Rentals "R" Us. Long before its widespread online popularity, Martina reached out to management companies, aiding individuals on Section 8 who struggled to secure housing and risked losing their vouchers. She also navigated the intricacies of eviction processes, unknowingly sowing the seeds for her future role in housing solutions.
In 1998, Martina expanded her entrepreneurial repertoire by establishing a private security company, where she not only provided security services but also trained individuals to become licensed security guards. Little did she know that over 25 years later, her diverse skills and experiences would converge to benefit those seeking housing solutions.
Martina's journey as a housing provider began at the young age of 19, a role she never envisioned for herself. Visiting her incarcerated brothers, she opened businesses to create employment opportunities for them and other family members with criminal backgrounds. Initiatives like a portable carwash and a process serving business were just the beginning.
Throughout her life, Martina consistently offered supportive services, empowering individuals to become self-sufficient. Unbeknownst to her, she was predestined to share her wealth of experience, and now, in Unseen Faces Foundation, Inc., Martina has found the platform to amplify her impact and make a lasting difference in the lives of those she serves.
Hattie and W.H. Gladney, formerly President and Co-President of Hattie's House, are Martina Gladney's late parents. Despite their passing, their legacy lives on in Martina, who gained valuable insights and unwavering support for the displaced and homeless through her experience with Hattie's House. Martina, influenced by her parents, particularly prefers using the term "displaced" over "homeless," as she imbibed a philosophy of non-judgment and continuous support, guided by the understanding that one can never predict life's challenges. Even though Hattie's House permanently closed its doors in 2023, the memories and lessons acquired from that experience have profoundly shaped Martina's perspective, contributing to a deeper comprehension of the roles and responsibilities at Unseen Faces Foundation, Inc.
In all our endeavors, it is crucial to recognize the significance of self-care, especially as housing providers. Having a supportive peer who understands our challenges is essential. Amidst our dedicated missions, we often neglect vital aspects like family, vacation time, and rest. Let's pause for a moment of gratitude, acknowledging the impact we have on lives. Each of us bears the responsibility of prioritizing our well-being; only by taking care of ourselves can we effectively support others. Just like the safety instructions on a plane, we must secure our own oxygen masks before assisting others.
We eagerly anticipate the voices of housing providers seeking personal support during overwhelming times; our team is here for you. It's essential to recognize that we, too, have lived experiences, and as peer support specialists, we are here to offer understanding and assistance.
